Swish Basketball Academy

About Swish

Swish aspires to create a community of partners who work together with us to teach, inspire and improve the lives of children in Taiwan in sports and in the classroom. We are working with schools, businesses, and people of like mind & purpose to promote this balance of school and play to the participants of our programs.

By partnering with others who share this view, we are putting together a program that will seamlessly involve sports, STEAM & STEM courses, computer programming, and many other subjects into a package that grooms children to be successful in sports, school and in all aspects of their lives.

Swish: 101

The 101 Program works with preschool children aged 2-5 years old. Its primary focus is developing small & large motor skills, culturing a love for physical play, and building social character.

Swish: Academy

The Academy program focuses on introducing and developing young players in the sport of basketball. We promote growth in athletic ability and comprehensive understanding as well. It is our goal to develop fundamentally sound players with an IQ of the game that will serve them well wherever they take their talents.

The age groups range from six to seventeen. Each age range covers the following levels of development.

U8 (8 years & under) – Learn fundamental movement skills and build overall motor skills
U11 (11 years & under) – Establish building blocks for overall basketball skills
U14 (14 years & under) – Further develop overall basketball skills
U17 (17 years & under) – Maximize individual and position-specific skills

Swish: University

More information to be announced winter 2019.

Swish Academy follows the USA Basketball Player Development Curriculum, which is based upon the scientifically-proven learning capabilities in Long-Term Athlete Development. The developmental steps as they apply to basketball are outlined below.

INTRODUCTORY – U8

– Learn fundamental movement skills and build overall motor skills
– Participate once or twice per week in basketball
– Continue to participate in other sport activity daily

Swish Coaching approach:

– Conduct group skill competitions
– Introduce team principles and concepts only
– Avoid 5×5 competition until fundamentals are fully developed

FOUNDATIONAL – U11

– Learn all fundamental and basic basketball-specific skills
– Establish building blocks for overall basketball skills

Swish Coaching approach:

– Spend 70% of time on individual fundamental training
– Give 30% of time to actual game competition
– Teach position concepts, but don’t assign player positions at any point in level
– Divide competition between special games (1×1, 2×2, 3×3) and 5×5 play
– Avoid focusing on actual 5×5 competition until later in the level

ADVANCED – U14

– Build the aerobic base
– Build strength towards the end of the level
– Further develop overall basketball skills
– Build the “engine”
– Consolidate basketball skills

Swish Coaching approach:

– Early in the level, spend 60% of time on individual training and 40% on competition
– Competition can include 5×5 play, special games and team-oriented practices
– Later in the level (depending on skill mastery) move to a 50:50 training-to-competition ratio and positions can be assigned

PERFORMANCE – U17

– Maximize fitness and competition preparation
– Maximize individual and position-specific skills
– Optimize the “engine” of skills and performance

Swish Coaching approach:

– Devote 75% of time to competition and 25% to training
– Remember: competition percentages include team-oriented practices and competition-specific preparation

As former school players, current adult players, coaches, and teachers, we at Swish Academy understand more than anyone the importance of balancing success in the classroom with success on the field/ court. As a #StudentAthlete, you have to be able to manage school and athletics effectively in order to be successful.

Learning to excel as a student and an athlete prepares you for life in the real world, whether you make it pro or not. Knowing this, we want to promote sports while also encouraging our players to pursue other academics like science, technology, math, international travel, and language exchange classes to name a few.

We are working on other programs of interest as well. Our willingness to step outside of basketball and encourage physical, academic, and social growth, is something that makes our program special.
